NBA legend Bill Russell Dies at 88 Years

Bill Russell, an NBA legend, is being remembered by the league after passing away on Sunday at the age of 88.

"Bill Russell was the greatest champion in all of team sports," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. 

With the Boston Celtics over the course of thirteen seasons, NBA star Bill Russell won a record 11 championships (1957, 1959–1966, 1968, 1969).

In his career, he won the NBA Most Valuable Player award five times (1958, 1961-1963, 1965).

During his basketball career (1958–1969), he won 12 NBA All-Star awards.

He led two NBA title teams as a coach (1968, 1969).

He was listed as one of the Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients for 2010.

Former and current NBA players as well as other well-known athletes posted their sympathies and compliments for Russell on social media.
